FREE STATE – On 17 May 2024, the Bethlehem Commercial Crimes Court sentenced Jeanette Nhlapo (38) after pleading guilty for committing fraud against the South African Revenue Service (SARS). The charges against Nhlapo originate from when the company she is co-directing, Castle Hill Trading, submitted fraudulent tax claims to the amount of R1.5 million for the July 2019 tax season. The company failed to give proof of the claimed input and the amount claimed. The matter was referred to the Hawks’ Commercial Crime Investigation in Bethlehem for further investigation.
Nhlapo pleaded guilty on four counts of fraud and was sentenced to a fine of R300 000 or three years direct imprisonment which is wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that she is not convicted of contravening Section 235(1) of the Tax Administration Act 28 of 2011. Four of her co-accused, including the company, were acquitted.
