Media Statement WESTERN CAPE: The Khayelitsha Regional Court have on 09 December 2024 convicted and sentenced Lungisa Mafuneka(50) for crimes ranging from robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping and extortion after he pleaded guilty.
Mafuneka was sentenced as follows: The court further ordered that the sentences imposed on counts 2, 3, and 4 will run concurrently with the sentence imposed on count 1, effectively the accused will serve a term of thirteen (13) years direct imprisonment. He was further declared unfit to possess a firearm. This sentence stems from November 2022 when two victims were allegedly kidnapped in Mandela Park, Khayelitsha while traveling in their vehicle. The kidnappers allegedly demanded R400 000.00 from the family. The investigation by the multi-disciplinary comprising of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Kidnapping Task Team, Provincial Office Organised Crime, Crime Intelligence, South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) and Law Enforcement led the team to the identification of the suspects. The victim’s vehicle was subsequently recovered in the process. Investigation further revealed that the family of the victims ended up paying R30 000-00 on 28 November 2022. Two suspects were arrested with cash receipts and a cellphone which was allegedly used in the extortion communications. However, the matter against Siviwe Yekiso was remanded to 14 March 2025 for plea confirmation. The accused remains in custody.
The Acting Provincial Head, Brigadier Ramovha expressed his satisfaction in the manner in which the investigation was collectively conducted and ensuring that the perpetrators face the full might of the law.
