Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – The Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crime (NPVC) team based in Bellville have on 31 December 2024, arrested Mawonga Gxenya (48) for his alleged involvement in the cash in transit robbery. During November 2012, a Transcash vehicle was at Liquor King, Nyanga Junction collecting cash. After the collection, the crewman was allegedly attacked by three unknown male suspects carrying firearms. The box containing cash was taken from him. During the robbery, one of the suspects allegedly dropped a glove as he ran from the scene. The glove, which was the subject of the investigation, was collected and subsequently sent for DNA. The suspect was consequently linked to the robbery. He was traced to Helderstroom Prison and requisitioned.
Gxenya made his first appearance at the Athlone Magistrate’s court on 31 December 2024 and the matter was postponed to 08 January 2025 for an attorney. The accused is remanded in custody.
