Abdeslam Ouaddou won 3-1 in CAF Champions League qualifying. He still walked off angry. Orlando Pirates should have buried La Cure Waves. Instead, after leading 3-1 at half-time, the tempo died and the tricks started.

“The rhythm dropped when we stopped being serious, and we started showboating,” said Ouaddou after the match.

He was not talking about style. He was talking about wasted chances — six or seven of them — and a second half that served egos instead of the scoreboard.

“And we have to understand that if we want to win the Champions League, that if we want to remain ambitious, to go far, we need to understand that football is going forward.

“Understand that football is going forward, football is scoring goals, football is taking chances and I was very really not happy about the second half.

“We have another game coming now, and we have to prepare to be more serious. Because to win the Champions League – we do have that ambition, we don’t have to hide it.

“But we must stop these things because they don’t help the team, they don’t serve anybody. They just serve the ego of the player who is doing it but it does not help the team.

“What I want as a coach? I want goals, goals, goals, that is what I want.”

Then came the line that will travel. If Pirates keep choosing showboating over killing games, Ouaddou says he is gone.

“The only moment I will accept this showboating? I am sorry, I will just leave everything, pack my bags because it cannot be my work. My work is winning games.

“I said to the guys, and they are now starting to know me as a coach… I said we cannot go into the second half and do showboating and miss six or seven chances to score goals.

“And if they want to continue with this, please without me as a coach. I prefer to stop and maybe they can bring somebody else who accepts the showboating.”
