Media Statement PARKTOWN – Police in Gauteng arrested a total of 925 suspects between Friday, 28 June 2024 and Sunday, 30 June 2024 for various crimes across all five districts in the Province. Sixty of these suspects were arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of alcohol. Out of these total arrests, 222 were arrested in Ekurhuleni District, where the Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has led multi-disciplinary forces of Operation Shanela. The suspects were arrested for crime ranging from armed robbery, rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, dealing in drugs, and dealing in illicit cigarettes. More than 280 other suspects were arrested in Tshwane for committing offences that include dealing in drugs, possession of dagga, and for being in the country illegally. Two hundred and nine suspects were arrested in Johannesburg District for offences that include possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen property, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery. Parallel operations were also conducted in West Rand and Sedibeng Districts, where more than 210 suspects were arrested for crimes that include possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of suspected stolen vehicle and possession of drugs. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various Magistrate Court’s from today. Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni urged the community to continue to work with the police as some of these arrests were effected as a result of tip-offs from members of the community. Ends
