A 66-year-old male suspect arrested for transporting a specimen of a listed threatened, or protected species (cycads) without a permit

POLOKWANE – A 66-year-old male suspect was arrested for transporting specimens of a listed threatened or protected species without a permit at Kranskop Toll Plaza, Modimolle policing area, on Monday 02 September 2024 at about 10:00.

Police received information about a white VW transporter combi with a trailer, both with Gauteng registration numbers, on N1 heading north transporting illegal cycads. The combi was stopped at Kranskop Tollgate Plaza. The police discovered cycads in the trailer without a permit. A total of 112 cycads (19 species) were discovered.

An undisclosed amount of money, including foreign currency, was found in the vehicle. The suspect was arrested and detained at Modimolle police station.

He will appear before Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 04 September 2024 for charges of transporting specimens of a listed, threatened, or protected species (cycads) without permit.

Police investigations are still ongoing.
