Media Statement POLOKWANE – The police in Thohoyandou in Vhembe District have arrested a 33-year-old suspect for alleged assault and murder of his 16-year-old niece, on Tuesday 11 February 2025 at about 20:30. The police reports indicate that the suspect was looking for the victim who did not sleep at home for some days. The suspect, who is an uncle to the victim, finally located the victim at home. On arrival at home, the suspect had a confrontation with the victim and the situation got tense, he then assaulted the victim with an object. The victim tried to escape but fell down, and her uncle took her back to the house. The victim’s mother summoned the emergency medical services personnel, and on arrival at the scene they declared the victim dead. The suspect (uncle) was arrested immediately. “It is shocking and disturbing to hear that the perpetrator in this matter is a family member, an uncle to the victim who is supposed to guide and protect a young girl in this regard. This incident underscores the importance of addressing, preventing violence within a family setup and communities at large”, Concluded General Thembi Hadebe. Ends
