Media Statement POLOKWANE – The Mahwelereng Regional Court has, on Thursday 11 July 2024, sentenced a 32-year-old man, Thapelo Caswell Ngwepe, to life imprisonment after he was convicted for raping and assaulting a 22-year-old year old woman at Sekgakgapeng village in Mahwelereng policing area. The court found that on 11 March 2023 in the evening, the victim won money after she participated in a competition at a tavern. She left the tavern and met three males and identified one of them. The suspects demanded the money she had won. They then threatened and dragged her to the nearby bushes. Two suspects held her down, and the one she identified broke the beer bottle and stabbed her on the thigh. Thereafter, he raped her, and they all fled the scene and left her behind. The victim reported the incident to the Police and cases of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) were registered and transferred to Mokopane Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS). It was assigned to Sergeant Saki Junior Ledwaba for further investigations. The suspect was then traced and arrested after being linked to the cases. Following thorough investigations and court proceedings, Thapelo Caswell Ngwepe (32) was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment for cases of rape and assault GBH. The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the investigating officer, and everyone who participated in the matter resulting to the splendid job done that ensuring that the accused was incarcerated for life.
