Ex-Chiefs boss: Amakhosi are not in this title race
Cavin Johnson has already drawn the line through his former club Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi are unbeaten after six Betway Premiership games, fourth on 12 points, eight behind Mamelodi Sundowns with two matches in hand.
They are four points behind second placed Orlando Pirates. On paper, that is close. Johnson however is not buying it.
“When you look at it now, it’s a two-horse race. I think it’s six games now. It’s Sundowns and Pirates,” the former Chiefs coach told FARPost.
He will give AmaZulu a nod for a steady start. Chiefs? Not in the conversation.
Johnson’s case against Fernando da Cruz’s side is blunt: the team keeps changing, the coach is still learning the country, and the big mistakes keep happening.
“It’s very difficult because they change their line-up quite often. He changes one or two players; sometimes he changes three,” Johnson explained.
“It’s a very difficult scenario because he is also new to South African football. He has to learn. We have 11 different cultures, and he comes from another culture.
“He worked in Morocco. Football is the same all over the world — eleven vs eleven, quality on the pitch. But besides that quality, we also have different dimensions and hierarchy on the pitch.”
Chiefs have had their moments. Johnson does not deny that.
“They have had some good scoring opportunities in games,” he added. “They have been good in certain moments.
“But then, as we all have seen, it’s the big mistakes they have been making in different departments.”
Unbeaten. Games in hand. Still not enough, according to a man who has sat in that dugout. Sundowns and Pirates at the top. Chiefs, for now, on the outside looking in.
