A 14-year-old boy who was arrested in connection with the death of 10-year-old Octavia Swarts (pictured) has been released into the care of his parents after the matter was not enrolled on the court roll.
Octavia’s body was discovered near a dam at Joostenberg Vlakte on Monday morning, 14 September 2026, after she was reported missing the previous afternoon.
Police initially opened an inquest docket while investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. A 14-year-old boy was later arrested on a murder charge and was expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The circumstances surrounding her death, as well as the teenager’s alleged involvement, remain under investigation. The allegations against the boy have not been tested in court.
The Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum has appealed to residents to provide any information directly to investigators and to avoid spreading unverified claims on social media.
CPF chairperson Arifa Osman said the community was deeply saddened by Octavia’s death and urged residents to allow investigators to establish what happened.
