Mopani Council to Elect New Executive Mayor After Shayi Resignation
MOPANI: The Mopani District Municipality Council is expected to nominate and elect a new Executive Mayor at a special council sitting this afternoon, following the resignation of Pule Shayi from the position.
The sitting was already underway on Wednesday, with councillors completing the formal council proceedings as African National Congress (ANC) Norman Mashabane Regional Chairperson Dagma Mamanyoha arrived at the venue.
Mamanyoha is expected to be considered for the vacant position as the ANC moves to fill the leadership gap created by Shayi’s resignation.
The council will first formally nominate a candidate before councillors vote on the appointment of the new Executive Mayor. The election is therefore expected to take place during this afternoon’s sitting, subject to the completion of the required council processes.
The new Executive Mayor will oversee the municipality’s political executive and provide leadership on key district priorities, including service delivery, infrastructure development, water and sanitation, as well as coordination between the five local municipalities.
Mopani District Municipality comprises Greater Tzaneen, Greater Giyani, Greater Letaba, Ba-Phalaborwa and Maruleng local municipalities.
The outcome of the special sitting is expected to confirm who will take over the position and lead the district’s executive structures for the remainder of the current council term.
