Mohafe opens up on Gallants sacking
Phuti Mohafe says Marumo Gallants dumped him without warning — and he still can’t square the timing.
The 52-year-old arrived in June after three strong seasons at Polokwane City.
Five Betway Premiership games later he was out, along with assistant Musa Bilankulu.
Two draws. Three losses. Gallants stuck in the relegation scrap.
He told iDiski Times he never saw it coming.
“I don’t know how to put it, but I can say it was a hectic week for me,” Mohafe said.
“I didn’t expect that news because of the timing of the season and the matches that we played.
“But I couldn’t complain more because I couldn’t control what the board came up with.”
Management had been backing him, he says. Encouragement. Support. Then the axe.
“There were words of courage and words of support, but the moment that happened, you could see that this wasn’t planned,” he added.
Mohafe insists the side was starting to gel. The first three games were rough.
Game three was Sundowns — the wrong night for a new system. After that, he says, the picture changed.
“Going forward on the fourth match, that is where you could see a lot of positives… the integration was starting to show,” he explains.
Transition play. Possession. Four goals across two matches — the first time they’d scored two in a game under him.
“That shows that there is a lot of improvement,” Mohafe argues. But the board still pulled the plug.
