Da Cruz finally snaps about Petersen’s latest costly howler
Kaizer Chiefs dropped two more points in Polokwane — and this time Fernando da Cruz did not hide his frustration with captain Brandon Petersen.
Amakhosi led through Lebohang Maboe at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, then watched a Giovanni Philander corner sneak in at the near pos to level the scoreline.
Chiefs then dropped to fourth on the Betway Premiership log table with 12 points from six games. Another preventable goal was conceded, leaving the French coach frustrated.
That is the pattern now. Petersen has played seven times this season, conceded seven, and kept one clean sheet.
Last season he was a pillar of Chiefs’ third-place finish, with 18 clean sheets and a sniff of a Bafana Bafana World Cup call-up.
But this season he is the story after every dropped point. Da Cruz finally addressed it.
“Yes, for sure, it’s disappointing because, in the first half, Brandon Petersen made two great saves, but after that, I didn’t see anything,” he told the media after the game.
Worse, Chiefs knew what was coming. “We knew that Polokwane City are very good at set pieces and crosses. But when we concede this type of goal, it can be disappointing.”
Next stop: Golden Arrows on Sunday, 20 September — now at Mbombela Stadium. Chiefs need a win to stay in the hunt.
Petersen needs a clean sheet to quiet the noise, and boost his confidence. Right now, he is not getting either.
