Police Warn Women To Walk Or Jog In Groups After Five Women Found Dead In Kempton Park Area
Police have urged women in and around Kempton Park to exercise caution and avoid walking and jogging alone as detectives investigate the deaths of four women whose bodies have been discovered in the area since July.
The fifth body was found in Olifantsfontein today, Monday morning, 14 September, adding to four previous discoveries in the broader Kempton Park area.
SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said investigators have identified concerning similarities in some of the cases. Several of the women were found partially or fully undressed and with visible bruising, while some of the discovery sites were in the same vicinity, including Rhodesfield and areas near the R21.
However, police have not confirmed that the deaths are linked or that a serial killer is operating in the area.
The cases under investigation include a woman who was found restrained with cable ties, while another woman, aged 38, was discovered behind a hotel in Rhodesfield on Saturday, 12 September, partially dressed in sports clothing.
The developments come as police continue searching for 38-year-old Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, who went missing after leaving her home in Rhodesfield for a run on 9 September. Her family reported her missing after she failed to return home. Police have not confirmed that her disappearance is connected to the deaths.
Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane has instructed the Gauteng provincial commissioner to establish a multidisciplinary task team to investigate the deaths and determine whether there is a connection between the cases. The team includes specialised detectives and investigative psychology resources.
Mathe said the warning to women is a precautionary measure and is not intended to restrict their movement.
Police have advised women, particularly in Rhodesfield and surrounding areas, to avoid isolated locations, remain vigilant and, where possible, walk or exercise in groups.
