JMPD TRU arrests suspect after suspected jammers and radios found in Soweto
A man has been arrested in Block 1, Thulani, Snake Park, Soweto, after Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit (TRU) officers found two suspected signal-jamming devices and three two-way radios at a property.
The arrest followed information received by officers while they were conducting crime-prevention patrols in the area. According to JMPD, the information was linked to a suspected stolen vehicle and alleged high-value vehicle thefts.
Officers proceeded to the identified property and conducted a search.
During the search, they found two suspected illegal signal-jamming devices and three two-way radios. The suspect was unable to provide an explanation for the items, according to JMPD.
He was arrested and detained at Doornkop Police Station.
Signal-jamming devices have previously been recovered during vehicle-crime operations in Gauteng. Such devices can interfere with tracking or communication signals and have been associated with vehicle theft and hijacking investigations.
JMPD’s Tactical Response Unit was established to strengthen proactive crime prevention and works with SAPS in combating serious and organised crime, including hijackings and vehicle-related offences.
Further investigations will determine whether the suspect and the recovered equipment can be linked to any specific vehicle thefts or other criminal activities.
