A schoolboy in uniform, a dusty yard, a ball at the back of his leg. The clip is trending. It is clear yet where it was filmed.

Zipho Dlangalala says you don’t need to know all that. This, he argues, is South African football typified in one clip.

The boy is playing with friends. Then he does the unthinkable: a pass off the back of the calf, casual, almost bored. The skill is ridiculous. The attitude is worse — in the best way.

“In case you don’t know what typifies our football,” Dlangalala said about the skill. “Effortless, with arrogance as if it doesn’t matter yet it’s so complicated. Who then can ever imagine how to coach a player like this?”

That is the sting. Not the trick. The brain behind it.

“What approach to maximise this kind of thinking even before the execution itself? There is no ‘approved, recognised, or licenced’ learning material in existence now to handle this.

“Those who have it are ignored. A player wired so differently! Isn’t the easy way out to dismiss him as a ‘Showman’ rather than a footballer? Lost is us — Africans.”

The warning is old and still true. Street talent arrives already fluent. Coaching manuals arrive later, and often too small.
