Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz again pointed to costly errors after his side were held by Polokwane City on Saturday — but he didn’t pin the result on Brandon Petersen.

Chiefs had looked in control after Lebohang Maboe’s first-half opener. They later conceded when Petersen’s mistake from a direct corner allowed Giovanni Philander to equalise and help City snatch a point.

After the match, Da Cruz said the team had only themselves to blame for dropping points again. He framed the problem as a pattern of collective mistakes rather than one player’s error.

“We create chances, we didn’t score and when you don’t score, you give the opportunity to the opponent to come back,” he said on SuperSport TV after the match.

“Since a few weeks ago when we made mistakes, we concede goals, so we need to work.

“It’s very easy to analyse, before we didn’t make mistakes, we didn’t give chances to the opponent to score.

“But now since the Richards Bay game, then Siwelele and today Polokwane City, the opponent doesn’t create chances.

“But we make big mistakes and we give the opponents the chance to score goals.”

The message was clear: opponents are not creating much, but Chiefs keep giving them openings. Petersen’s fumble was part of that picture, not presented as the sole cause.

Da Cruz also struck a more positive note. Chiefs remain unbeaten in the league and, he said, must keep believing.

“We must not doubt, because we made good things but we do not have the killer instinct in the two boxes – ours and the box of the opponent also,” he added.

“But we also did good things, so we need to continue to believe in ourselves because we are on a good way.”

The draw left Amakhosi fourth after six games, with three wins and three draws. AmaZulu moved above them after beating Marumo Gallants.
