Petersen howler gifts Polokwane a point as Chiefs let lead slip
Another moment of sloppy goalkeeping undid Kaizer Chiefs in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
Lebohang Maboe had given Amakhosi the lead they wanted. In the 29th minute Pule Mmodi slipped him in and Maboe finished with the calm of a man who has been Chiefs’ midfield metronome all year.
Four passes, one shot, 0-1. Job done, or so it looked. Polokwane refused to fold.
Surprise Manthosi took a booking for the cause. After the break Willy Moloto threw on Giovanni Philander and told Rise and Shine to hang in.
They did more than that. In the 73rd minute Philander whipped an inswinging corner toward the near post. Brandon Petersen came, hesitated, and punched the ball into his own net. One delivery. One fumble. 1-1.
Chiefs had the ball, the better patterns, Ighodaro’s running and Ndlovu’s snap. They never found a second goal. Polokwane, winless in four coming in, left with a point their stubbornness earned.
Maboe’s strike should have been the story. Petersen’s spill is the one that will travel. Chiefs stay unbeaten. Two points they needed went missing in the Limpopo air.
They remain third with 12 points after six games. Polokwane moved into the top 8 with seven points off six games.
In another match, also played on Saturday afternoon, AmaZulu added to Marumo Gallants’ struggles, beating them 1-0 in Durban.
Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya continued his impressive scoring run, netting the only goal of the match.
