Roodepoort Police Officer Killed by Her Pitbulls in Soweto
Warrant Officer Mmaleho Olga Bawa of Roodepoort SAPS was found dead at a home in Dobsonville Gardens, Soweto, after being attacked by her dogs, officials said on Friday.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster said the dogs were reportedly pit bulls. The cluster extended its condolences to Bawa’s family, colleagues and loved ones.
No time of death, number of dogs involved or details regarding an inquest have been released.
The case follows other fatal dog attacks reported this year, including a Mitchells Plain woman who was killed by her own two pit bulls in February and a Vryburg man who died following an alleged pit-bull attack in January.
South Africa has no national pit-bull ban. Compiled figures put fatal dog attacks at about 100 a year, with a large share linked to pit bulls or similar mixed breeds. Some municipalities require dogs to be kept on leashes and muzzled in public.
