Zimbabwean National Arrested After Hillbrow Raid Uncovers Suspected Fake ID Operation

Police have arrested a Zimbabwean national in Hillbrow following a raid that uncovered what they suspect was an operation producing fraudulent South African smart ID cards.

Acting on information received on Wednesday, 9 September, police searched a premises in the Hillbrow precinct and seized six completed smart ID cards, 22 blank cards, a laptop and a smart-card printer.

According to police, the suspect was also allegedly recruiting people seeking fraudulent bank statements and payslips.

The suspect is expected to appear in court soon. The charges against him are yet to be tested in court.

The latest arrest comes after a similar document-fraud operation was uncovered in Hillbrow in 2022. During that raid, police found a 47-year-old Zimbabwean national in possession of more than 95 South African IDs, birth certificates, smart identity cards, passports, bank statements, work permits, SASSA cards and other documents.
