Sundowns go six clear after 3-0 win over Siwelele
Mamelodi Sundowns beat Siwelele 3-0 at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night to stretch their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership to six points.
The Brazilians dominated the first half but were held 0-0 at the break by a stubborn Siwelele side, who had sacked head coach Lehlohonolo Seema earlier in the week.
Debutant goalkeeper Wandile Mthombeni was the visitors’ standout, denying Brayan León in a one-on-one.
Miguel Cardoso made several changes from the weekend win over Golden Arrows, handing Kutlwano Letlhaku his first start of the season and recalling Sphelele Mkhulise, Zuko Mdunyelwa, Malibongwe Khoza and Aubrey Modiba.
The breakthrough came in the 58th minute when Letlhaku finished a loose ball inside the Siwelele box to make it 1-0. Siyanda Ndlovu added a second in the 79th minute before substitute Tashreeq Matthews wrapped it up in the second minute of stoppage time.
The result keeps Sundowns unbeaten in the league this season. They now sit on 19 points after six matches, having won five and drawn one.
Siwelele remain without a league win, with two draws and four defeats from six games, and stay near the bottom of the table.
Godfrey Mosoetsa took charge of Siwelele from the bench after Seema and assistant Willem Jackson were relieved of their duties earlier this week. The visitors sat deep and limited Sundowns before the interval, but they faded after the opening goal.
Sundowns next travel to Chippa United on Saturday. Siwelele continue their search for a first victory of the campaign and will host Golden Arrows at the weekend.
