Flight Operations Suspended at Richards Bay Airport Following Safety Downgrade
The uMhlathuze Local Municipality has announced the immediate suspension of all flight operations at the Richards Bay Airport in northern KwaZulu-Natal, effective today.
The grounding of flights comes after the South African Civil Aviation Authority downgraded the airport’s status to Category 2.
A Category 2 classification indicates that the airport has failed to meet critical regulatory requirements, making it unsafe to continue normal operations until the deficiencies are corrected.
According to municipal authorities, the downgrade was triggered by operational failures regarding the airport’s emergency services.
Specifically, essential fire and rescue vehicles were not properly maintained and are currently grounded while undergoing urgent repairs by mechanics.
Because an airport cannot legally or safely operate commercial flights without functional fire-and-rescue backup, authorities had no choice but to halt all air traffic.
The municipality stated that technicians are working around the clock to service the emergency vehicles so that the airport can restore its safety compliance rating and resume standard flight schedules as soon as possible.
