South Africa’s Correctional Services Suspends CFO and Three Top Officials Over R1.6 Billion Tender Fraud Probe
In a major crackdown on institutional corruption, the Minister of Correctional Services, Dr Pieter Groenewald, has announced the immediate suspension of four high-ranking department officials, including the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
The sweeping suspensions come amid a explosive criminal investigation into extensive fraud and irregularities linked directly to a lucrative coal supply tender contract.
A formal criminal dossier has already been opened with South Africa’s elite crime-fighting unit, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, widely known as the Hawks.
The case has been processed, as investigators begin unraveling the depth of the tender inflation and financial manipulation.
In tandem with the police investigation, Groenewald confirmed a multi-layered forensic audit is being launched independently.
The audit aims to map out every discrepancy within the tender process, laying down the groundwork to secure air-tight criminal prosecutions against the culpable parties.
The decisive move serves as a robust enforcement of Groenewald’s primary political mandate.
Upon his appointment to the cabinet portfolio, Groenewald explicitly designated the eradication of institutional fraud and strict enforcement of consequence management as his administration’s defining mission.
“The Minister welcomes the breakthrough in this matter,” the official departmental communication noted, reinforcing that the ministry will offer unconditional co-operation to investigative units to guarantee that compromised state officials are thoroughly held to account.
