Accused Appeared in Court for Attempted Murder of Police Officer
Hawks members from Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation arrested Siphesihle Vezi (30) for attempted murder on police and two civilians in Cato Manor.
According to police reports on 24 August 2026 at about 18:30, police were doing their crime prevention duties when they noticed a silver Toyota Etios which was parked at Bonela sports field.
They approached the vehicle and found two people. A search was conducted and police found one AK 47 with live rounds of ammunition.
The two suspects were placed under arrest.
When police were driving on Dunbar Road towards a police station they were followed by two vehicles, a white Toyota Double Cab and a white Toyota Corolla Cross.
The occupants of the two vehicles fired shots towards the police and injured the two arrested suspects. Police drove to the police station and the two injured suspects were taken to hospital for medical attention.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the injured suspects were going to meet with the occupants of the two vehicle for cash in transit robbery planning and the driver of the Toyota Double Cap was identified as Siphesihle Vezi.
One suspect, Makhosonke Zungu (60) was formally charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and he appeared in the Durban Magistrate Court.
He was remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 28 September 2026.
On Thursday, Hawks members received information about the whereabouts of Vezi and they swooped on his workplace at Isipingo. He was placed under arrest and charged accordingly.
He appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 4 September 2026 and was remanded in custody. The matter was postponed to 14 September 2026 for formal bail application.
