Uber exits Nigeria after 12 years
Uber has ended its operations in Nigeria, bringing its 12-year presence in Africa’s most populous country to a close.
The ride-hailing company announced that its services would cease on 2 September 2026 following what it described as a “thorough review” of its business. Uber did not give a specific reason for the withdrawal, saying the decision was linked to its evolving business priorities and investment focus in Africa.
Uber launched in Lagos in 2014 before expanding to other Nigerian cities, becoming a major player in the country’s growing app-based transport industry. Its departure comes as the sector faces rising fuel costs, inflation, currency pressures, and increasing competition.
The company has also ended operations in Uganda, but said the withdrawals would not affect its services in other African markets. Its help centre in Nigeria will remain available until 23 September to assist customers with outstanding queries.
The exit follows Uber’s decision earlier this year to leave Tanzania and comes alongside a broader global restructuring at the company, including plans to cut about 3,300 corporate jobs.
