AFRICA MUST BECOME THE DESTINATION OF TODAY
POLOKWANE: Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba has called for greater African cooperation to unlock the continent’s tourism potential, saying Africa must stop being viewed as the “destination of tomorrow” and position itself as the destination of today.
Ramathuba was speaking during the Africa Tourism Leadership Forum (ATLF) 2026 at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World in Polokwane on Thursday.
Amongst the attendees were Minister of Tourism Patricia de Lilla, counterparts Ministry of Uganda and Mauritius and other Members of the Executive Council of Limpopo 7th administration.
She said Limpopo’s strategic position, sharing borders with Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, makes the province a natural gateway for tourism, trade and investment across Southern Africa.
Ramathuba urged African countries to strengthen regional partnerships, improve road, rail and air connectivity, simplify cross-border travel and promote multi-destination tourism.
She said tourism should be a major pillar of the African Continental Free Trade Area, with greater focus on creating jobs, attracting investment and opening opportunities for women and young entrepreneurs.
“The future of African tourism will not be determined by what we possess, but by how boldly we choose to work together to unlock its immense potential,” Ramathuba said.
She described the hosting of the first ATLF in Limpopo as a milestone for the province, showcasing its wildlife, cultural heritage and tourism attractions, including Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe National Park and the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve.
Ramathuba said the success of the forum should ultimately be measured by investments secured, jobs created, businesses supported and lives transformed.
“When Africa believes in Africa, the world will believe in Africa too,” she said.
