Sundowns see off Milford to keep pressure on Pirates
Mamelodi Sundowns continued their push for the Betway Premiership title with a convincing 2-0 victory over Milford FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
The Brazilians had to be patient before eventually finding a way through Milford’s stubborn defence.
Iqraam Rayners broke the deadlock deep into first-half stoppage time.
Aubrey Modiba created the opening with a clever cutback from the byline.
Rayners made no mistake as he calmly finished to give Sundowns a 1-0 lead.
Milford showed plenty of resilience after the break and looked to stay within touching distance.
However, Sundowns continued to control possession and apply pressure in search of a second goal.
Antonio Van Wyk eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 76th minute.
Modiba was involved again, this time finding Van Wyk with a well-timed pass.
The attacker kept his composure before slotting the ball past the Milford goalkeeper.
Sundowns finished the match with 61% possession and created 11 shots.
Milford managed eight attempts but struggled to create clear opportunities.
Ronwen Williams also played his part by making an important early save from distance and was named Man of the Match.
In midfield, Marcelo Allende and Tashreeq Matthews helped Sundowns control the tempo.
Milford threatened occasionally but lacked the required quality in the final third.
Sundowns introduced fresh legs in the second half to maintain their intensity.
The victory keeps the Brazilians firmly in pursuit of league leaders Orlando Pirates.
