Malema given until 30 September to apologise to Judge Matojane and JSC
Julius Malema has until 30 September 2026 to apologise in the National Assembly to SCA Judge Elias Matojane and the Judicial Service Commission.
Parliament’s Powers and Privileges Committee set the deadline after Speaker Thoko Didiza referred the matter when Malema missed a February 2026 date. Committee chair Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe said he must arrange the appearance with the Speaker’s office.
The finding stems from April 2021 JSC interviews, when Malema questioned Matojane about a 2019 High Court ruling that the EFF, Malema and Mbuyiseni Ndlozi pay Trevor Manuel R500,000 in defamation damages. CASAC complained that he used the JSC to pursue a personal and party interest. The Ethics Committee found a breach of the members’ code; the National Assembly adopted an apology order in December 2021.
Malema reviewed the decision in the Western Cape High Court. The court dismissed the application in May 2025. After he failed to meet Didiza’s later deadline, he was referred for possible contempt. Failure to apologize by 30 September could still amount to contempt of Parliament.
