Tete murder suspect alleges boxer left him paraplegic
The 22-year-old man accused of masterminding the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani Tete claims the boxer left him paraplegic and later threatened him with a gun after discovering he was involved with Tete’s estranged wife.
The affidavit was read in the Mdantsane Magistrates’ Court today, Tuesday, as Uzuzole Goqwana and alleged middleman Sinebongo Qase applied for bail. The State is opposing release. Prosecutors say Goqwana hired Qase to recruit hitmen Siphesihle Kolisa and Athandwa Gangala. The two alleged shooters have dropped their bail bids.
Tete, 38, was shot dead outside his NU17 home on 21 August while waiting for his gate to open. His 27-year-old girlfriend was wounded; two children in the car were unharmed. The NPA says the killing was premeditated.
Tete, nicknamed Last Born, was a two-division world champion famous for an 11-second title-fight knockout in 2017. He had recently completed a doping ban and was preparing a comeback.
