Producer and DJ Skillz unveils cinematic, faith-driven “Phumelela” music video featuring Simmy and Zeh McGeba
South African DJ, producer, and recording artist Skillz officially enters a definitive new chapter as a lead artist with today’s highly anticipated release of the music video for his hit single, “Phumelela,” featuring vocal powerhouse Simmy and Zeh McGeba.
Presented through gamma., the cinematic visual makes its exclusive broadcast premiere today (Friday), on Trace TV, before going live globally on YouTube later today.
The release follows the massive commercial and viral success of his chart-topping hit “Mamma,” alongside Zee Nxumalo and Sykes.
With “Phumelela”—a song title translating to “to succeed” or “to prevail” in isiZulu—Skillz pairs his signature, world-class production legacy with an evocative, faith-driven visual narrative that captures the spirit of triumph after struggle.
Directed by the visionary Luthando Sigubudu and produced by Kwezi Kreativ, with executive production handled by Supreme Music Group’s Wandile Ngubane and Zwakele Mdletshe, the music video draws deep creative inspiration from the historic pilgrimage traditions of Lalibela, Ethiopia.Shot against sweeping, dramatic sandstone landscapes, the video follows a group of believers embarking on a profound spiritual journey through the mountains in search of blessings, purpose, and clarity.
The visual landscape relies on heavily atmospheric elements, blending flowing white and blue garments with the ambient glow of candlelight and open flames to reflect the emotional and spiritual depth of the track.
Speaking on the heart behind the project, Skillz explained his desire to leave a lasting impact on his audience.
“I want my community to watch the video and leave with a sense of hope. No matter how dark or lonely things might feel, I want them to remember that there’s still purpose, there’s still faith, and there’s always a way towards the light,” Skillz shared.
Born and raised in Esikhawini, KwaZulu-Natal, Skillz is no stranger to the upper echelons of the South African music industry.
He began composing instrumentals at just 15 years old and secured his first major industry placements in 2014.
Over the past decade, he has established himself as a highly sought-after producer, crafting hits for legendary acts including DJ Zinhle, Zakes Bantwini, Sun-El Musician, DJ Tira, Mampintsha, DJ Lag, Babes Wodumo, and DJ Sox.His impressive recent catalogue includes “Sorry”—a collaboration with DJ Zinhle, MK Productions, and Section Five—and the viral sensation “Mamma.
With “Phumelela,” Skillz moves firmly from behind the scenes and directly into the spotlight, establishing a distinct, authentic sonic and visual identity that sets the stage for a promising trajectory as a powerhouse lead artist.
