Three Accused to Stand Trial Over Murder of Limpopo Education Official Dr Mehlape
POLOKWANE, LIMPOPO – Three people accused of involvement in the murder of Limpopo education official Dr Nancy Mehlape are expected to stand trial in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane from 2 to 13 November 2026.
Tshepo Gabriel Ranoto, Mahlodi Melida Mathole and Michael Sello Molongoane face charges including conspiracy to commit murder, murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The criminal proceedings follow the killing of Mehlape, whose death attracted considerable attention within Limpopo’s education sector and surrounding communities.
The State alleges that the accused participated in a planned operation that culminated in Mehlape’s murder and robbery.
The case against the three accused was separated from that of another person who pleaded guilty in connection with the killing. The remaining accused are expected to contest the allegations when their trial proceeds.
During the November proceedings, prosecutors will have to present evidence connecting each accused to the alleged conspiracy, the murder and the other offences contained in the indictment.
Evidence could include witness testimony, cellphone records, forensic findings and information concerning the planning and execution of the alleged attack. The precise evidence against each accused will only become clear as it is formally introduced in court.
The murder of a senior education official is a matter of substantial public interest because of its impact on public administration and the safety of officials serving communities.
The accused remain presumed innocent. The State carries the burden of proving every charge against each individual beyond a reasonable doubt.
The trial has been allocated approximately two weeks on the Polokwane High Court roll, although court schedules remain subject to change.
