LPC to seek evidence from Mkhwanazi over allegations against lawyers
The Legal Practice Council (LPC) has issued a media statement saying it will seek evidence from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi following his recent appearance before Parliament.
In the statement dated 20 August 2026, the LPC said it noted with concern allegations about the alleged involvement of certain legal practitioners in unlawful activities.
“The allegations are serious and require careful consideration. The LPC will therefore engage Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi and request further information regarding the legal practitioners allegedly implicated, as well as any available evidence supporting the allegations,” the statement reads.
Mkhwanazi had told Parliament that organised crime groups may be funding expensive lawyers to defend suspects linked to their operations, including young people who appear unable to afford high legal fees, with payments possibly channelled through lawyers’ trust accounts.
The LPC said that once it receives the information and evidence, it will decide on the appropriate course of action in line with the Legal Practice Act and its Rules. It reaffirmed its commitment to dealing with any allegations of professional misconduct fairly through the proper legal and regulatory processes.
