Counterfeit R200 Notes Discovered During Beer Purchase Attempt in Tongaat

A routine beer purchase in Tongaat took an unexpected turn on Saturday when two counterfeit R200 banknotes were allegedly used in an attempt to buy five cases of beer at a bottle store.

The incident happened at a business on Gopalall Hurbans Street, where a 22-year-old man reportedly attempted to pay for the alcohol using a mixture of genuine and counterfeit cash.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers responded after the business reported a disturbance.

According to RUSA, a reaction officer established that two of the R200 notes presented during the transaction were counterfeit.

The man reportedly told officers that his sister had given him the money and sent him to buy the alcohol for their tavern. He claimed he did not know that counterfeit notes had been mixed with the genuine currency.

Cashier Spots Fake R200 Notes

The attempted purchase came to a halt when the cashier identified the two suspicious banknotes.

After the discovery, the man contacted his brother and waited outside the bottle store while the situation was being addressed.

He later decided that he no longer wanted the beer and left the premises without completing the purchase.

The incident has raised questions about how the counterfeit notes came into circulation and whether the man was knowingly attempting to use them.

However, based on the information available at the time of the incident, there was no indication that the man admitted to knowing the notes were counterfeit.

No Arrest Details Immediately Available

RUSA reported the discovery of the counterfeit notes and the circumstances surrounding the attempted purchase, but no arrest details were immediately available.

The incident comes amid continued concerns about counterfeit South African currency being used in everyday transactions, where unsuspecting businesses and customers can potentially become victims.

For the bottle store, the cashier’s discovery prevented the two counterfeit R200 notes from being accepted as payment.

The circumstances surrounding the origin of the notes remain unclear.
