Orlando Pirates Beat Sekhukhune 1-0 in MTN8 Semi-Final First Leg
Orlando Pirates have one foot closer to another MTN8 final after edging Sekhukhune United 1-0 in a tense semi-final first leg at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday afternoon.
Deon Hotto’s first-half strike was enough to give the defending champions a crucial advantage, but the narrow margin leaves the tie firmly alive ahead of the return fixture.
With a place in the final at stake, Pirates had to withstand sustained pressure from a Sekhukhune side determined to make home advantage count.
Instead, the Buccaneers struck at a crucial moment.
Deon Hotto Gives Pirates the Lead
Sekhukhune started the match with purpose, looking to put Pirates under pressure from the opening stages.
The hosts created early momentum, but Pirates gradually grew into the contest and began controlling possession.
Their reward arrived in the 44th minute.
A clever touch from Ghampani Lungu opened space for Hotto, who made no mistake with his finish into the top-right corner.
The goal gave Pirates a 1-0 lead heading into the break and changed the complexion of the contest.
By the 72nd minute, the visitors had enjoyed 59% possession compared with Sekhukhune’s 41%, reflecting their growing control of the match.
Sekhukhune Push for an Equaliser
Sekhukhune refused to let the deficit derail their challenge.
After the interval, Cédric Kaze’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Bright Ndlovu coming close with a header.
Pirates goalkeeper Chaine was also forced to intervene, making an important save to deny a long-range effort as Sekhukhune increased the pressure.
But the hosts struggled to turn their opportunities into a goal.
Pirates, meanwhile, continued to threaten on the counter.
Oswin Appollis came close early in the second half when he fired narrowly wide before the Buccaneers made a triple substitution in the 65th minute.
Sebastian Pedersen Makes Long-Awaited Pirates Debut
Among the changes was the long-awaited introduction of new striker Sebastian Pedersen.
Pedersen entered the match alongside Kabelo Kgosietsile and Simphiwe Selepe as Pirates looked to maintain their advantage and manage the closing stages.
The visitors could not add a second goal, but their defensive organisation proved enough to keep Sekhukhune at bay.
The hosts continued searching for an equaliser until the final whistle, only for the Pirates defence to hold firm.
Pirates Take Crucial Advantage Into Second Leg
The 1-0 victory gives Pirates a valuable advantage ahead of next Saturday’s second leg at Orlando Amstel Arena.
The defending champions will now have the opportunity to finish the job on home soil and take another step towards a fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
However, the tie remains far from over.
Sekhukhune need only one goal to level the aggregate score, meaning Pirates cannot afford to approach the return fixture as though the contest has already been decided.
For Kaze, the task is now more demanding. His side must overturn the deficit against a Pirates team that remains unbeaten this season.
The pressure will be on both sides when the two teams meet again, but for now, the Buccaneers have drawn first blood.
