Pirates Hit by Injuries Ahead of Chippa Clash as Key Returns Boost Squad

Pirates Hit by Injuries

Orlando Pirates head into Sunday’s Betway Premiership clash against Chippa United with injury concerns threatening to disrupt their plans, but the defending champions have also received a timely boost with several players closing in on returns.

The Buccaneers will be without Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa when they face Chippa at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

Midfielder Sihle Nduli is also a doubt after being forced off early during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against AmaZulu.

The setbacks come at an awkward time for Pirates, who will be determined to respond after dropping two points against Usuthu.

Yet there is encouraging news within the squad.

Pirates Receive Timely Injury Boost

According to a club statement, Kabelo Dlamini and Masindi Nemtajela are close to returning and have travelled with the squad to Durban.

Their potential availability could give coach Jose Riveiro greater depth as Pirates look to maintain their unbeaten start to the league campaign.

New striker Sebastian Pedersen could also provide another attacking option, while Sifiso Luthuli is available for selection.

Pirates have collected four points from their opening two league matches. They remain unbeaten and will be looking to extend that record against a Chippa side still searching for its first league victory.

Pirates Need to Be More Clinical

Despite their strong start, Pirates know they must become more ruthless in front of goal.

Defender Nkosikhona Ndaba believes improved finishing could prove decisive as the champions look to turn their chances into more victories.

“If we can improve our finishing and make the most of the opportunities we create, we can win a lot more games,” Ndaba said.

His assessment comes after Pirates were held to a draw by AmaZulu, a result that left the Buccaneers with only one win from their opening two league matches.

The challenge against Chippa could therefore provide an opportunity to regain momentum and put pressure on their rivals at the top of the table.

Chippa See Champions’ Visit as Major Test

Chippa United enter the fixture from a different position, with the club still searching for its first win of the campaign.

Coach Brandon Truter, however, believes facing the defending champions can provide his players with the motivation required to produce a major performance.

“We are facing the champions. That is motivation in itself for the players to put their best foot forward,” Truter said.

Chippa will need to produce a disciplined performance if they are to end Pirates’ recent dominance in this fixture.

Pirates Chase Sixth Straight Win Over Chippa

History gives the Buccaneers another reason for confidence.

Pirates have dominated the fixture in recent seasons and are chasing a sixth consecutive league victory over Chippa.

That record will add further pressure to the visitors, who know they face a difficult assignment against a side with championship ambitions.

For Pirates, the priority will be to manage their injury concerns, make the most of their chances and avoid another frustrating result.

For Chippa, the match represents an opportunity to upset the champions and finally open their league account with a victory.

With injuries on one side and returning players providing hope on the other, Sunday’s encounter promises to be a significant early test for both teams.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 on Sunday at Kings Park Stadium. Tickets are available through TicketPro, as well as selected Spar and Jet outlets.
