Maskandi Community Mourns as Iconic Dancer Gupta Mchunu Is Laid to Rest
The Maskandi community gathered in grief on Friday as family, musicians and devoted fans came together to bid farewell to celebrated dancer Gupta Mchunu, whose life was cut short in a devastating car crash.
Mchunu was laid to rest earlier today following his death in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was travelling to a performance in Richards Bay with popular Maskandi singer Scebi Dlamini when the fatal crash occurred.
The deaths of the two entertainers have sent shockwaves through the Maskandi community, with fans and fellow artists mourning the loss of two figures who played a significant role in the traditional music scene.
While mourners gathered for Mchunu’s final farewell, attention has also turned to Dlamini’s family, who are preparing for his final send-off.

The grief was evident at the Dlamini homestead, where a large delegation of prominent Maskandi artists arrived to offer condolences and stand alongside the grieving family.
The delegation was led by Maskandi heavyweight Thokozani Langa and included several well-known names from the industry.
Among those who visited the family were Ntencane, Khuzani, Ali Mgube, Saliwa, Ndoni, Gandaganda, Cevuzile, Mnikezwa, Bhekihonga, Falabo and Mcebo.
Their presence reflected the deep bonds that exist within the Maskandi community, particularly at a time when the genre is mourning two losses at once.
