KZN Political Killings Task Team Arrests Fifth Suspect in Ndlovu Murder
The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team has arrested a fifth suspect in connection with the murder of Umngeni Municipality DA councillor Nhlalayenza Ndlovu, bringing the investigation closer to those allegedly behind the killing.
The 44-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday morning in the Mpophomeni area and is expected to appear before the Howick Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Ndlovu was gunned down at his home in 2023 while his wife and children were present, a killing that sent shockwaves through the local political community and intensified scrutiny of politically motivated violence in KwaZulu-Natal.
The latest arrest was confirmed by SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, who said the number of people arrested and charged in connection with the murder has now risen to five.
Alleged mastermind remains in custody
According to Mathe, investigators have identified Chief Simphiwe Zuma of Nxamalala in Impendle as the alleged mastermind who issued the hit order.
Zuma remains behind bars after being denied bail twice.
“The PKTT investigation has established that Chief Simphiwe Zuma of Nxamalala in Impendle has been identified as the alleged mastermind who issued the hit order. Zuma remains in custody after being denied bail on two occasions,” Mathe said.
The investigation has also uncovered alleged roles played by individuals who are said to have been directly involved in carrying out and coordinating the murder.
Mathe said a suspected hitman and a coordinator linked to Ndlovu’s killing have already pleaded guilty.
Their plea proceedings are expected to be finalised on 21 August 2026 in the Pietermaritzburg Regional Court.
Police pursue remaining leads
The latest arrest signals that investigators are continuing to work through the alleged chain of events surrounding Ndlovu’s murder.
Mathe said the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team remained determined to identify and prosecute everyone who played a role in political killings.
“Investigations into the matter remain ongoing, and police will continue to pursue all outstanding leads to ensure that every person found to have played a role in this murder is brought before the courts,” she said.
The investigation remains active, with police expected to follow additional leads as the case progresses through the courts.
Warning to those behind political killings
The task team also issued a strong warning to individuals who allegedly finance, organise or carry out political murders in the province.
Mathe said the message from the PKTT was unequivocal: political killings would not be tolerated.
She said those who order, finance, facilitate or execute such murders would be pursued and brought before the courts.
For Ndlovu’s family, the latest arrest represents another significant development in a case that began with a brutal killing inside their own home.
With five suspects now arrested and charged, attention will turn to the upcoming court proceedings and whether the investigation ultimately establishes the full extent of the alleged conspiracy behind the councillor’s murder.
