North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi Reshuffles Provincial Cabinet, Moves Three MECs
North West Premier Lazarus Kagiso Mokgosi has reshuffled three key positions in the provincial cabinet, moving senior officials between portfolios and appointing a new MEC for Education.
The changes were announced on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, more than two years after Mokgosi took office as premier in June 2024.
Under the reshuffle, MEC Wessels Morweng will leave the Community Safety and Transport Management portfolio and take charge of Sports, Arts and Culture.
Virginia Tlhapi will move in the opposite direction, leaving Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation to become MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management.
The third change sees Dr Desbo Mohono, the current Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, appointed as the new MEC for Education.
The reshuffle places three key areas of provincial government under new political leadership, with education, public safety and transport among the portfolios affected.
Premier Gives No Reason for Cabinet Changes
Despite the significance of the changes, Mokgosi’s office has not yet provided official reasons for the reshuffle.
There are also no details at this stage about whether other positions within the provincial cabinet or administration will be affected.
The announcement has therefore raised questions about what prompted the changes and whether further adjustments could follow.
The movement of Morweng and Tlhapi effectively swaps their respective portfolios, while Mohono’s appointment brings a new political head to the Education department.

For now, the Premier’s office has not indicated whether the latest changes are part of a broader restructuring of the provincial executive.
