Two South African police officers were killed in a violent shooting in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, on Friday evening after they responded to reports of gunfire and were allegedly ambushed at the scene.

The officers, who were attached to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Anti-Gang Unit, were part of a crime prevention team patrolling the area when they heard gunshots.

They drove towards the reported source of the gunfire, but were met with a barrage of shots shortly after arriving, according to police.

Both officers were fatally wounded in the attack.

Two women travelling in a Volkswagen Polo were also killed during the shooting, adding to the devastation at the scene.

Police Launch Major Investigation

The killings have triggered a multi-unit investigation as authorities work to establish exactly what happened and identify those responsible.

Specialised units, including Crime Intelligence, the Tracking Team, Crime Scene Management and the Hawks, have been deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Investigators are expected to examine the crime scene, gather forensic evidence and establish the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.

At this stage, no arrests have been confirmed.

The identities of the two Anti-Gang Unit officers have also not yet been released.

Attack Raises Concern Over Police Safety

The deaths have once again highlighted the dangers faced by police officers responding to violent crime, particularly in areas where gang activity and gun violence remain persistent concerns.

The officers were reportedly carrying out crime prevention duties when they responded to the sound of gunfire. Their deaths underline the risks faced by law enforcement personnel when entering active crime scenes.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have yet to establish who opened fire or what may have triggered the attack.

Police Appeal for Information

SAPS has appealed to members of the public who may have witnessed the shooting or have information that could assist investigators to come forward.

As the investigation continues, police are expected to focus on identifying the attackers and determining whether the shooting was a targeted ambush.

For now, the investigation remains active, with specialised police units working to piece together the events that left four people dead in Reiger Park.
