North West Councillor John ‘Papi’ Ratele Arrested After Assault and Armed Robbery Allegations
A controversial North West councillor has been arrested after three people were allegedly assaulted and robbed during a confrontation following a community meeting in Maboloko.
John “Papi” Ratele, 44, a Ward 4 councillor in the Madibeng Sub Region of Bojanala, handed himself over to police following allegations involving assault, malicious damage to property and armed robbery.
He is also facing allegations linked to attempted murder and the pointing of a firearm.
The latest arrest comes as Ratele remains at the centre of a bitter and long running leadership dispute in the community, with tensions appearing to have escalated into a series of criminal cases.
Three people allegedly attacked after meeting
North West SAPS spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed that Ratele surrendered to police.
According to Myburgh, three victims, aged 40, 40 and 32, had been called to attend a meeting allegedly convened by Ratele in Maboloko.
By the time they arrived, however, the meeting was already coming to an end.
The victims allegedly got into their vehicle to leave, but their path was blocked by other vehicles.
Police allege that Ratele then confronted the driver and demanded to see the occupants’ cellphones, accusing them of recording videos.
The driver was allegedly assaulted.
When the other two occupants attempted to intervene, they were also allegedly attacked.
The three victims eventually managed to escape and sought refuge at a nearby house before being taken to a local clinic for medical attention.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ratele is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
Arrest follows separate criminal case
The latest allegations come only days after MDN News reported on Ratele’s appearance in court on separate charges.
Those charges include arson, attempted murder, malicious damage to property and theft.
The development places the councillor at the centre of multiple serious criminal allegations, although the charges remain allegations until tested in court.
Ratele was previously granted bail under strict conditions.
Among those conditions was an order prohibiting him from addressing members of the public.
However, residents in the area have alleged that Ratele subsequently breached the order by addressing community gatherings.
Residents have also accused him of openly defying the recognised traditional leadership structure, including Chief Tumo Tsajoa.
These allegations have not been tested in court.
Leadership dispute fuels community tensions
The latest developments have added another layer to a dispute that has divided the community for years.
At the heart of the conflict is a longstanding leadership dispute involving competing claims over authority and recognition.
The situation has repeatedly generated tension among residents, with political, community and traditional leadership interests becoming increasingly intertwined.
