Celebrated media personality, broadcaster, and global businesswoman Bonang Matheba will be honoured with the 2026 Trailblazer Award at the fifth annual Basadi in Music Awards.
The prestigious event will take place on Saturday, 8 August 2026, at the Joburg Theatre.
Presented under this year’s theme, “REWIND,” and the campaign Africa to the World, the Trailblazer Award recognizes individuals whose vision, courage, and innovation have transformed the entertainment industry while creating opportunities for future generations.
For more than twenty years, Matheba has consistently challenged conventions and redefined what is possible for African women in media.
Her broadcasting career spans iconic roles, from presenting LIVE (later Live Amp) to hosting popular radio shows on YFM and Metro FM.
She has also commanded the stages of major continental and global events, including the South African Music Awards (SAMAs), Metro FM Music Awards, MTV Africa Music Awards, Miss South Africa, BET Awards International Red Carpet and Global Citizen: Mandela 100. Beyond the microphone, Matheba has built a successful business empire.
She is the founder of the luxury beverage brand House of BNG, executive producer and star of the reality series Being Bonang, and the bestselling author of From A to B.
Hloni Modise Matau, Founder and CEO of the Basadi in Music Awards, praised Matheba’s transformative impact: “The Trailblazer Award is reserved for individuals whose impact changes the course of an industry. Bonang has done exactly that. She has inspired women to own their voices, recognize their value, and understand that success is something you intentionally create.”
Expressing her gratitude, Matheba noted that the recognition serves as a powerful affirmation from fellow women in the industry.
She highlighted her ongoing mission to keep doors open for the next generation while expanding House of BNG onto the global stage.
The announcement drew widespread praise from event partners. Dichaba Phalatse, Head of Video Entertainment at SABC2, commended Matheba as a true cultural ambassador.
Xoliswa Nduneni-Ngema, CEO of Joburg City Theatres, added that Matheba remains a powerful symbol of resilience and possibility. Manaileng Maphike, Managing Director of Maphike Inc. and Advisory Board Member, noted that true leaders are defined by their ability to open doors for others.
