HAWKS seize mining equipment valued at R5 million during a disruptive operation

The Rustenburg-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation in the North West in collaboration with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources; and Illicit Mining and Infrastructure Task Team seized four (4) excavators and one (1) dump truck during a disruptive operation, conducted on Tuesday at Hencor Mine in Rustenburg.

The disruptive operation follows information received about alleged illegal mining activities at Hencor Mine.

According to police reports, the team operationalised the information and proceeded to the scene. On arrival, they allegedly found four abandoned excavators and a dump truck. The four excavators and a dump truck, estimated at R5 million, were seized for further investigation.

The North West Hawks Head, Major General Nombuso Khoza has commended the team’s efforts in the fight against the scourge of illegal mining.

These disruptive operations demonstrate the Directorate’s commitment in tackling illegal mining activities, which has a negative impact on community safety“, said Khoza.
