Orlando Pirates have issued a statement explaining the chaotic scenes outside the Orlando Amstel Arena during Saturday’s Betway Premiership clash against Milford FC, where many supporters were unable to enter the stadium despite holding valid tickets.
The Buccaneers began their league title defence with a 2-0 victory over Milford, but videos showing frustrated fans locked outside the venue quickly spread across social media.
In a statement, Pirates apologised to supporters affected by the incident and said the decision to close the stadium gates was made by the Venue Operations Centre (VOC) in the interest of public safety.
According to the club, the lockdown was caused by criminal syndicates selling counterfeit tickets and helping people gain unlawful access to the stadium. Pirates said this created a serious safety risk and made it difficult to manage the event safely.
Although the club said the decision to lock the stadium was beyond its control, it acknowledged the disappointment of supporters who had purchased legitimate tickets but were denied entry.
Pirates confirmed that affected supporters would be able to apply for refunds through Open Tickets.
The club added that it would continue working closely with the Premier Soccer League, stadium management, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen matchday security, combat ticket fraud and ensure supporters enjoy a safe and secure experience at future matches.
