Antonio Van Wyk Reveals Why He Chose Mamelodi Sundowns Over Europe
New Mamelodi Sundowns winger Antonio van Wyk has revealed that the club’s winning mentality, history and relentless pursuit of trophies convinced him to return to South Africa instead of continuing his European journey.
The 24 year old completed his move to the African champions from Austrian side SV Ried after two seasons abroad, bringing an end to a successful European spell where he established himself as a key player.
Despite making 30 league appearances last season and gaining valuable experience in Austria, Van Wyk believed Sundowns offered the perfect environment to take the next step in his career.
For the former Stellenbosch FC attacker, the chance to compete for major honours on a regular basis was a decisive factor in choosing Chloorkop as his new home.
Speaking on the Mamelodi Sundowns Pitchside Podcast, Van Wyk said the club’s history and trophy winning culture played a major role in his decision.
“The history of the club and the trophies attracted me to Sundowns. You’re almost guaranteed to win one or two trophies every season,” Van Wyk said.
“As a player, you always want to build a career filled with trophies and achievements. I felt that if my next step wasn’t going to be in Europe, then it had to be with the African champions.”
The winger arrives at Sundowns at a time when the club continues to set high standards domestically and across the continent. The Brazilians have built a reputation as one of Africa’s most successful clubs, combining local dominance with regular appearances in continental competitions.
Van Wyk said he has quickly adapted to life at Sundowns, crediting his new teammates and the club’s environment for making his transition smoother.
The attacker has already outlined ambitious targets for his time at the club, with reclaiming the Betway Premiership title and adding another CAF Champions League trophy among his biggest goals.
Looking at the club badge, which currently carries two stars representing CAF Champions League triumphs, Van Wyk said his dream is to help Sundowns achieve another historic milestone.
“When you look at the badge, you see two stars. My dream is to help the club add a third star. That would be a huge achievement for all of us,” he said.
Van Wyk became Sundowns’ first signing of the current transfer window as the club continues strengthening its squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The champions have also added former Golden Arrows defender Siyanda Ndlovu as they prepare for another demanding campaign both domestically and in Africa.
With a strong desire to win trophies and make history, Van Wyk believes his move to Sundowns could become one of the defining chapters of his career.
