Safa Confirms Hugo Broos’ exit as Bafana Bafana coach
The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially confirmed that Hugo Broos has stepped down as Bafana Bafana head coach, bringing an end to one of the most successful periods in the national team’s recent history.
SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan announced Broos’ departure on Friday, taking a moment to thank the Belgian mentor for his contribution to South African football.
“I want to say Hugo Broos, thank you very much,” Jordaan said during the announcement.
Broos leaves the national team after overseeing a remarkable turnaround since taking charge. Under his leadership, Bafana Bafana regained their competitiveness on the African continent and re-established themselves on the global stage.
One of the biggest highlights of his tenure came when he guided South Africa to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Bafana went on to make history by becoming the first South African senior men’s national team to reach the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup.
His departure comes as his contract with SAFA comes to an end, with the association now preparing to usher in a new era under a different coach.
SAFA has not yet officially announced who will succeed Broos, although an announcement is expected soon. Indications are that Pitso Mosimane will take over.
The appointment of the new coach will be closely watched as Bafana prepare for the next phase of their international campaign, with expectations now significantly higher following the progress made under Broos.
While his successor will inherit a talented squad and a team full of confidence, Broos leaves having restored belief in South African football and having written his name into the history books through the achievements recorded during his time in charge of Bafana Bafana.
