Andrea Johnson Pressed Over Feroz Khan Friendship at Madlanga Commission
The Madlanga Commission heard dramatic evidence on Wednesday as former IDAC head Advocate Andrea Johnson came under pressure over her close personal relationship with Crime Intelligence General Feroz Khan and allegations linked to the sharing of a sensitive docket.
The Commission was taken through WhatsApp exchanges between Johnson and Khan, with evidence leaders arguing that the messages showed a much closer relationship than the limited professional association initially reflected in Johnson’s statement.
Johnson conceded that she considered Khan a “very good friend”. She also accepted that their relationship was personal and close.
The Commission heard that the two exchanged personal messages, discussed family matters and at times used affectionate language. Evidence leaders said the chats suggested a level of familiarity that went beyond ordinary professional contact.
Johnson was also questioned about a meeting arranged with Khan at her office after he allegedly raised concerns that people were plotting against him. The Commission heard that Johnson advised him to use a VIP entrance and avoid signing in at reception.
She accepted that Khan had visited her in a personal capacity as a friend, not as an official VIP attending an IDAC meeting.
The questioning then turned to allegations that Johnson shared a docket relating to an assault complaint involving Khan and Brigadier Petty. Johnson said she could not recall all the details independently, but after seeing documents supplied to the Commission, she accepted that they triggered her memory.
She later placed on record that allegations made by witnesses could implicate her in possible criminal conduct and that the matter was before the NPA for a decision on whether she should be prosecuted.
Johnson indicated that she would rely on her protection against self-incrimination when questioned on those matters.
Evidence leaders argued that witnesses had given strong evidence that Johnson shared the docket with Khan. The Commission warned that if Johnson did not counter that evidence, it may be left with little basis to reject it.
The exchange became one of the most serious moments of Johnson’s testimony, moving from questions about friendship and trust to the possibility of criminal consequences.
The Commission adjourned briefly after Johnson asked for time to consult her legal team.
