Da Cruz sets the record straight on Chiefs and fighting for trophies
Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz has spoken candidly about the team as he is expected to guide them back to glory days.
He says it is not yet time for the team to be considered title contenders for the Betway Premiership as he still wants to strengthen the squad.
Speaking at a press conference after Sunday’s Toyota Cup triumph, Da Cruz said he was satisfied with how the team looks at the back, but still wants to reinforce the attack.
“Right now, no,” said Da Cruz when asked if Chiefs are ready to compete for the league title.
“We still need to add attacking players. Once we have a complete squad, we will be able to assess whether we can fight for the league title and perform well in the CAF Confederation Cup.”
The French coach said he is working with club management to sign players who will add attacking quality.
“We are working with management to find players who will strengthen our attack and offer different ways of playing,” Da Cruz said.
Ahead of the Toyota Cup match, Fernando Da Cruz had revealed the positions he feels Kaizer Chiefs still need to reinforce with top-quality players.
“There are four positions upfront. We want a striker, two wingers, and an attacking midfielder,” the coach said.
“We have good players in these positions, but we want different profiles so we can play in various ways.”
Da Cruz said he was pleased with how Chiefs are defending at the moment.
“Defensively we are much better. We have a good defensive structure, and now the next step is to strengthen how we attack,” he said.
Kaizer Chiefs are expected to continue their search for new signings before the new season begins, as Fernando Da Cruz wants his team to be competitive in all competitions.
