Rooival Fire: Nephew, 22, Arrested After R1.5 Million Family Home Destroyed in Alleged Arson
A family returned home to unimaginable devastation after a late night fire reduced two houses and everything inside them to ashes in Rooival village. Police have now arrested a 22 year old man, who is alleged to be the homeowner’s nephew, in connection with the blaze that left an estimated R1.5 million in damage.
The arrest follows a swift police investigation after the destructive fire tore through a family homestead on Friday evening, leaving behind nothing but charred rubble and unanswered questions.
According to police, the incident unfolded on Friday, 24 July 2026, at around 20:00. The homeowner was in Seshego when he received a distressing phone call from his younger sister informing him that their family home was engulfed in flames.
Emergency fire crews from Mokopane were immediately dispatched to the scene in an effort to contain the blaze. Despite their response, the fire had already spread rapidly through the property.
When the homeowner arrived home at approximately 23:00, he found his ten room house and a separate three room back house completely destroyed. Every possession inside both buildings had been consumed by the flames.
Police estimate the total value of the destroyed property at approximately R1.5 million.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is the homeowner’s 22 year old nephew. Police say a neighbour allegedly saw him at the scene shortly before or during the fire.
Investigators further allege that as community members attempted to extinguish the flames, the suspect confronted them and allegedly fought with residents in an effort to stop them from putting out the fire. He then reportedly fled the scene on foot before police arrived.
Mahwelereng police, operating under the Waterberg District, launched an immediate manhunt following the opening of an arson case. The operation led to the suspect’s arrest in Rooival village.
The 22 year old is expected to appear before the Mokerong Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 27 July 2026, where he will face a charge of arson.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire are continuing.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Rooival community, where residents are still coming to terms with the scale of the destruction. Authorities are expected to determine whether additional charges may arise as investigators continue gathering evidence.
