POLOKWANE: As ANC supporters gather in Thohoyandou for preparations for the Nelson Mandela Rally, the party in Limpopo is mourning the death of a political veteran who made history as the first mayor of Molemole Local Municipality.

Julia Mothudi, who served as the municipality’s inaugural mayor following its establishment in 2000, has died, leaving the ANC Peter Mokaba Region to pay tribute to a life dedicated to public service and the organisation’s political struggle.

The news has cast a sombre mood over the ANC in Limpopo at a time when the party is preparing for a major political gathering at Makwarela Stadium in Thohoyandou.

ANC Provincial Executive Committee member and deployee to the Peter Mokaba Region, Florence Radzilani, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the Mothudi family to convey the organisation’s condolences.

Mothudi was the mother of the late struggle stalwart Fistos Mothudi and was remembered by the ANC as a committed servant of the people who served in various leadership positions after being deployed by the organisation.

Her political career was marked by a number of significant milestones. She made history when she became the first mayor of Molemole Local Municipality after the establishment of the post apartheid system of developmental local government.

She later served as Speaker of the Capricorn District Municipality, further cementing her role in local government and public service in Limpopo.

For the ANC, her contribution represents a chapter in the party’s history that stretches beyond political office and into decades of service to communities.

The delegation that visited the Mothudi family included ANC Women’s League Provincial Chairperson Mamedupi Teffo, ANC Peter Mokaba Deputy Regional Secretary Kholofelo Lehong, sub regional and branch leaders, as well as members of the ANC Veterans League.

The ANC Peter Mokaba Region extended its deepest condolences to the Mothudi family as relatives, comrades and friends mourn her death.

The organisation said it honoured the former mayor’s lifelong commitment to serving the people and her dedication to the values of the ANC.

Her death comes as the ANC continues preparations for the Nelson Mandela Rally, adding a sombre note to a period of heightened political activity in Limpopo.

For those who knew her and worked alongside her, Mothudi’s legacy will be remembered through the public institutions she helped lead and the communities she served during a formative period in South Africa’s democratic local government.
