Innocent Mdledle Questions Siyanda Ndlovu’s Sundowns Move, Says Pirates Were Better Choice
Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Innocent Mdledle has cast doubt over Siyanda Ndlovu’s decision to join Mamelodi Sundowns, warning that the promising midfielder could find himself fighting an uphill battle for regular football at Chloorkop.
Ndlovu emerged as one of the brightest young talents in the Betway Premiership after an impressive debut campaign with Golden Arrows. His performances quickly attracted interest from several of South Africa’s biggest clubs, with Orlando Pirates widely reported to be among the leading contenders for his signature.
Instead, the highly rated midfielder chose to continue his career with reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, a move that has already sparked debate over whether it is the right step for his long term development.
Mdledle believes the Buccaneers would have offered Ndlovu a stronger pathway to establish himself as a first team regular, pointing to the club’s long standing reputation for trusting and developing local talent.
“The one thing you must always remember about Pirates is that they are about developing South African players,” Mdledle said.
Drawing from his own experience, Mdledle explained how Orlando Pirates transformed his career after signing him from the former Vodacom League.
“I can make an example of myself. They fetched me from the then Vodacom League and took me straight to the first team. I settled in and played. Pirates and Sundowns scouts are different.”
He admitted he remains unconvinced that Sundowns is the ideal destination for a young player looking to secure consistent game time.
“So, him joining Sundowns, I’m not sure about that move.”
Pirates praised for developing South African talent
Mdledle believes Orlando Pirates have consistently shown they know how to identify promising players and provide them with opportunities to flourish at the highest level.
He praised the club’s recruitment structure, insisting its scouts rarely get their decisions wrong.
“The Orlando Pirates scouts know their business. They are always spot on.”
He highlighted the rise of defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who progressed through the club’s development system before making an immediate impact in the senior side.
Mdledle also pointed to rising star Relebohile Mofokeng as another example of the club’s commitment to nurturing young South African footballers.
“They can spot talent when they come across one. Look at Mbekezeli Mbokazi. He came through the development ranks and surprised a lot of people.”
“Relebohile Mofokeng is another example. Every time Pirates sign a player, they know what they are doing.”
A tough challenge awaits at Sundowns
Although Ndlovu’s move to Mamelodi Sundowns represents a major milestone in his career, the competition for places is expected to be fierce.
Sundowns boast one of the strongest and deepest squads in South African football, filled with experienced internationals and established stars. Breaking into the starting line up will require consistent performances and patience from the young midfielder.
Mdledle believes Ndlovu has the ability to succeed, but cautions that earning regular minutes at Sundowns will be significantly more difficult than it might have been at Orlando Pirates.
As the new Betway Premiership season approaches, all eyes will be on whether Ndlovu can justify his decision and establish himself in one of Africa’s most competitive squads.
